UPDATE: As previously announced on May 13, Verbena Health suspended operations pending the outcome of ongoing investigations into the misappropriation of funds. The board of directors filed criminal complaints against Michelle “Mo” Malkin with the Seattle Police Department and the FBI. Following the initial internal investigation, Mo was terminated as Executive Director. No other individuals on either the board or staff have been under any suspicion of wrongdoing.

In the wake of these heartbreaking events, Verbena’s former staff members have worked diligently and tirelessly to find ways to continue Verbena’s services and programs. Their dedication to Verbena’s mission and their professionalism in these difficult times has been incredible. They have shown such heart and courage and the board is truly indebted to them. Both the board and former staff are committed to ensuring that the services and programs offered by Verbena continue to be available to lesbians, bisexual and queer women and transgender individuals.

At this time, there are many organizations that have generously offered to assist in the temporary transition of services in the hope that the impact on those we serve will be as minimal as possible. We will announce any decisions regarding the continuation of services as soon as we know more.

Verbena is also indebted to the LGBTQ community, whose support and encouragement during this difficult time has been critical. As we enter the month in which we celebrate Pride, we reflect on the strength and tenacity of our community. Verbena has been proud to serve our community’s needs, and we recognize how few resources are available to meet these needs. We are committed to ensuring the health and well being of our community members, and we plan to draw on our strength to weather a painful and difficult period so we can offer these vital services once again.

Statement of Verbena Board of Directors Concerning Operations

It is with great sadness that the Board of Directors of Verbena Health, a health care
service provider for lesbian, bisexual women and transgender individuals, is announcing that it is immediately halting all services. This action is being taken to safeguard the integrity and future of the health care programs offered by Verbena until a thorough investigation of the allegations of financial mismanagement is completed.

It is our hope that at the end of our investigation, the Board of Directors, with the full
support of the community, will find a way to continue to provide these essential health care services, which so many people in the lesbian, bisexual and transgender community have come to rely upon.

Verbena’s Board of Directors is grateful for the support we have already received in
these difficult times and appreciate the patience and understanding of our community
as we work to ensure the future of our mission.
